Steep coral wall dropping into blue water while diving Elphinstone Reef, Marsa Alam

Marsa Alam dive site

Elphinstone Reef Diving

Elphinstone is the signature offshore dive of the Marsa Alam coast: a long, narrow reef rising from deep water, with sheer walls dropping into the blue, a drift along both sides, and plateaus at each end. It is an exposed site with real current and depth, and it rewards experienced, certified divers.

What the dive is like

You usually drift one of the long walls, watching the reef on one side and the open blue on the other, with a hang in the current possible at the plateaus. Walls are covered in soft corals and gorgonians, and the blue water brings the chance of pelagics. It is a current-driven dive, planned around the day's conditions.

What you might see

Elphinstone is known for the chance of oceanic whitetip sharks (more likely in the autumn-to-early-winter window), grey reef sharks, and occasional hammerheads in summer, along with tuna, trevally, and big reef life. These are wild encounters - we never promise a specific animal, and many great dives here are about the wall and the blue itself.

Who it suits

Because of the current, depth, and exposure, Elphinstone is recommended for Advanced-level divers or confident Open Water divers with a current logbook and recent dives. If you are newer, we will build up at the bays first and add Elphinstone when you are ready.

Hotel pickup and transfers

Elphinstone is a day-boat trip with an early start. Pickup is included from hotels in the standard coastal zone; share your hotel and we will confirm the morning pickup time.

Safety and sea conditions

This is a current and depth-exposed site. We brief drift technique, deploy SMBs, and dive in small guided groups. If wind or current is too strong, we move to a sheltered alternative - the reef is never worth an unsafe dive.

Frequently asked questions

Can I dive Elphinstone as a beginner?

It is not a beginner site. The current, depth, and exposure mean we recommend Advanced level or confident Open Water divers with recent, logged dives. Beginners start in the bays.

When is the best time for sharks at Elphinstone?

Oceanic whitetips are more likely from roughly October to December, hammerheads more in summer. All sightings are seasonal and never guaranteed.

How do I get to Elphinstone Reef?

It is an offshore day-boat trip from the nearest harbour, with an early start and a short surface crossing.

What if the conditions are too rough?

We switch to a sheltered reef or reschedule. Elphinstone is exposed, so weather decides whether it runs on the day.
