Sheltered bays for beginners and relaxed dives

Abu Dabbab is a wide, shallow bay with seagrass meadows, resident green turtles, and a good chance of guitar sharks on the sand. Marsa Mubarak is a sheltered bay near Port Ghalib known for dugong sightings over seagrass and a small pinnacle. Both stay calm and shallow, which makes them ideal for first dives, courses, and long photography dives.

Offshore reefs and walls for certified divers

Elphinstone Reef is the area's signature dive: a long reef with steep walls, drift along the sides, and a plateau, best for experienced divers. Sha'ab Samadai (Dolphin House) is a horseshoe reef with a resident spinner dolphin pod and easy reef dives outside the protected lagoon. Sataya, in the Fury Shoals to the south, is a large reef system with a big dolphin pod and gentle reef and coral-garden dives.

House reefs and shore entries

The house reefs around Port Ghalib and Coraya Bay are easy shore entries good for check dives, night dives, and skills practice. They are an underrated part of a Marsa Alam trip when the wind keeps the boats in.

Which Marsa Alam sites are best for beginners?

The sheltered bays - Abu Dabbab and Marsa Mubarak - plus the Port Ghalib and Coraya Bay house reefs, all shallow and calm.

Can I dive Elphinstone as a beginner?

Elphinstone is an exposed reef with current and depth, so it is recommended for experienced, certified divers - typically Advanced level or with a solid logbook. Beginners are better suited to the bays first.
