Quick takeaways

Marsa Alam is diveable all year.

March to May is the best all-round comfort window.

June to August has warm water and excellent visibility, but hotter air.

October to December is the headline window for oceanic whitetips at Elphinstone.

Marsa Alam is diveable year-round, but the best month depends on what you want. Some divers want warm water and easy packing. Some want quieter reefs. Some are chasing dugongs, dolphins, turtles, or sharks.

Here is the practical version we use when helping guests choose travel dates.

November to February: cooler water, quieter reefs, strong dugong chances

Winter is cooler above and below the surface. Expect roughly 23 to 25 C water depending on the month and wind. A 5 mm full suit is usually the comfortable choice, especially for two dives per day.

The upside is space. Shore sites can be quieter, visibility can be excellent, and seagrass bays such as Abu Dabbab, Marsa Mubarak, Egla, and Abu Sail can be especially interesting for turtle and dugong-focused days.

March to May: the best all-round shoulder season

Spring is our favourite recommendation for divers who want balance. Air temperatures improve, wind often becomes easier, water warms gradually, and the reefs feel active without the heaviest summer heat.

This is a strong window for mixed plans: shore dives one day, Dolphin House another day, and maybe Elphinstone if the diver is confident enough.

June to August: warm water and high visibility

Summer brings warm water, hot air, and long bright days. A 3 mm suit or shorty can be enough for many divers, although comfort is personal.

Visibility can be excellent, but the surface interval heat is real. Hydration, shade, and good timing matter. If you are booking boat days, plan early and avoid leaving everything to the last minute.

September to October: warm water and the start of the big-animal mood

Autumn keeps the water warm while the worst heat begins to ease. This is a very comfortable period for reef diving, photography, and boat trips.

By October, Elphinstone starts moving into its famous oceanic whitetip window. If sharks are your priority, this is when the conversation gets serious.

Simple month-by-month booking logic

Choose winter if you want quieter reefs and turtle or dugong-focused bays. Choose spring if you want the safest all-round comfort. Choose summer if warm water matters most. Choose autumn if you want warm water plus a better shark-season conversation.

The best itinerary is usually mixed: easy shore dives for control and comfort, then one bigger day such as Elphinstone or Dolphin House when conditions match the group.
