Elphinstone is the shark-focused day trip from Marsa Alam.
Price is 120 EUR including two tanks, snacks, transfer, water, and dive guide.
Common departure windows are 05:00 or 10:00 depending on plan and conditions.
Best suited to confident certified divers because current and blue-water exposure can change quickly.
Elphinstone is the big-name reef for divers who come to Marsa Alam with sharks in mind. It is an offshore wall and plateau system where deep water, current, and open-ocean traffic create a very different feeling from the calm shore bays.
The headline species is the oceanic whitetip shark, also called longimanus. Grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, hammerheads, tuna, barracuda, turtles, and rich soft coral are also part of the Elphinstone story, but the main reason divers book this trip is simple: sharks.
What makes Elphinstone special?
Elphinstone is not just another reef. It rises from deep water, has steep walls, north and south plateaus, and a position that exposes it to pelagic life. That is why the site can feel alive in a way sheltered bays do not.

The southern plateau is especially famous for oceanic whitetip encounters in season. The walls are also covered with soft coral, gorgonian fans, anthias clouds, and reef fish, so even a no-shark dive can still be beautiful.
Price, inclusions, and timing
Our Elphinstone trip is 120 EUR per diver. It includes two tanks, snacks, hotel transfer, water, and a dive guide. Rental dive equipment is not included.
Departure can be around 05:00 or 10:00 depending on the operating plan, weather, group, and boat availability. Early starts can be worth it because Elphinstone gets busy and conditions can be cleaner in the morning.
Best season for sharks
Oceanic whitetip shark encounters are most strongly associated with autumn into early winter, especially October to December. Warmer months can bring other pelagic activity, and hammerhead sightings are possible, but Elphinstone is still wild ocean diving: no operator can promise a shark.
The right expectation is not "guaranteed sharks." The right expectation is "one of the Red Sea's best chances when season, current, visibility, and luck agree."
Who should book Elphinstone?
Elphinstone is best for confident certified divers with recent dives, stable buoyancy, and comfort around current. You should be able to descend calmly, stay close to your guide, manage your depth, and hold position without grabbing coral.
If your last dive was years ago, book a shore refresher first. Marsa Assalaya, Egla, or Abu Sail are better warm-up dives before stepping onto an exposed reef like Elphinstone.
Shark safety basics
Stay with the guide, keep the group tight, avoid splashing at the surface, and do not chase sharks. If an oceanic whitetip approaches, stay calm, vertical, aware, and close to your buddy team.
Good shark dives are disciplined dives. The calmer the group, the better the experience for divers and animals.
Elphinstone or Dolphin House?
Choose Elphinstone if your priority is sharks, walls, current, and a more advanced dive profile. Choose Dolphin House Samadai if your priority is dolphins, a full boat day, lunch, and a gentler reef experience.
Many divers do both: one serious shark day at Elphinstone, then one social boat day at Dolphin House.
