Diving in Marsa Alam

Marsa Alam sits on the quieter southern stretch of Egypt's Red Sea coast, where many reefs start a short swim from shore and the boat rides to the famous offshore sites are shorter than further north. We run daily diving in Marsa Alam for every level, from a first guided dive in a calm bay to drift dives along Elphinstone's walls, with small groups, local guides, and hotel pickup along the coast.

Why Marsa Alam is one of Egypt's best diving destinations

Marsa Alam trades the crowds of the northern resorts for healthy reefs, sheltered bays, and quick access to the southern offshore sites. Sheltered marsas (bays) such as Abu Dabbab and Marsa Mubarak give beginners calm, shallow water with seagrass meadows, while Elphinstone, Daedalus, and the Fury Shoals reward certified divers with walls, drifts, and big-animal encounters.

Conditions are diveable year-round. Water sits around 22-30 C through the seasons and visibility is often 20-40 m, though both vary with weather and the time of year.

Best dive sites in Marsa Alam

The headline sites split into two groups. Close-to-shore bays - Abu Dabbab (turtles and seagrass), Marsa Mubarak (dugong and a small pinnacle), and the local house reefs around Port Ghalib and Coraya Bay - suit beginners and relaxed dives. Offshore reefs - Elphinstone, Sha'ab Samadai (Dolphin House), and the Fury Shoals around Sataya - are drift and reef dives for certified divers, reached by day boat or fast RHIB.

Our dive-site atlas lists every reef, wreck, and shore entry with depth, currents, and what you can realistically expect to see.

Diving options for beginners

If you have never dived, a Discover Scuba Diving session in a sheltered bay is the usual first step: a short briefing, basic skills in shallow water, then a guided dive holding no deeper than 12 m. No certificate is needed and it is run one guide to a small group.

Already certified but rusty? A guided check dive in calm water gets your buoyancy and weighting back before moving to busier sites.

Daily diving for certified divers

Certified divers join daily two-dive boat trips and shore dives. Typical days run two dives with a surface interval, or three dives on the longer offshore trips. Nitrox is available for certified Nitrox divers, and we plan depth, drift, and entry style around your experience and the day's conditions.

PADI courses in Marsa Alam

We teach the full path from first-timer to professional: Discover Scuba Diving, Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster. Courses combine theory, sheltered-water practice, and open-water dives at real sites, so you finish having dived the same reefs you came to see.

Shore diving vs boat diving

Shore diving from the bays is flexible, relaxed, and easy on the budget - good for skills, photography, and long, shallow dives. Boat diving reaches the offshore reefs and drift sites you cannot swim to, with more variety in a day. Most guests mix both across a trip.

Safety and sea conditions

Every trip starts with a dive briefing. Guides carry oxygen and a first-aid kit, boats run with VHF radios, and group sizes are kept small so guides can stay close. Plans depend on weather, sea state, season, and certification level, so the dive sites listed are typical, not guaranteed - if conditions move, we change the site or the order to keep the day safe.
